My name is Sergeant Sherydan Salazar, and I am currently serving in the United States Marine Corps, and it is an honor to represent my family, my community, and my home state through my service. I am the daughter of Melinda and Jamie Salazar, and the proud sister of Devan, Jayden, and Chailyn.
I was born and raised in Northern New Mexico, a region where hunting is deeply woven into our culture, economy, and way of life. Hunting is not only a long-standing tradition but also a vital industry for our rural communities. My father has been guiding for outfitters for more than 25 years, and through his work, my family has witnessed firsthand how essential this industry is to the livelihood and survival of our community and families.
For many families in these rural and often low-income regions, hunting goes far beyond recreation. It provides meat for the winter, brings financial stability, and creates opportunities for local employment. Guiding, private permits, and outfitting all play a direct role in helping families make ends meet, particularly in areas where economic opportunities can be limited.
I am incredibly grateful and honored to have been given this opportunity. This means more to me than words can express, and I am deeply thankful to the FAMS group for making it possible. Their support has given me the chance to reconnect with the land and traditions that shaped me, and I am truly blessed for that.
